If your teenager will soon be getting a driver's license, you may be bracing yourself for additional costs on gas, vehicle wear and tear and auto insurance. But don't fret - there are ways to save, particularly on teen auto insurance. Here's how:

#1: Put your teen on your car insurance policy to receive a discount

When you have more than one vehicle on your auto insurance policy, you'll qualify for a multi-car discount. The more vehicles that are included on the policy, the bigger your discounts.

#2: Enroll your teens in a defensive driving course

Show your insurance company that your teens are responsible drivers by enrolling them in a defensive driving course. By taking extra classes to gain more experience, your teen can earn car insurance discounts. Though required in some states, another potential discount option is to sign up for a graduated driver's license (GDL). A GDL can help acclimate your teen to driving by limiting night-time driving, establishing curfews and setting passenger limits over a period of time. Check with your state's department of motor vehicles to see if a GDL is required for your teen.

#3: Buy a safe car

Your insurance company charges higher rates for cars that are considered high-risk, such as new or sports cars. Save on teen auto insurance by buying a slightly older car that features anti-theft devices, anti-lock brakes, airbags and other safety features. You can also equip your teen's car with these devices on your own to earn this car insurance discount.

#4: Earn good grades

A great report card can be more than a fridge ornament - it can also merit a teen a car insurance discount. Your insurance company will have a pre-set GPA requirement, and if your student earns the required grades, the discount may be applied. Additionally, membership in a volunteer or service organization may earn extra discounts for your teenager.
